John McKusick

M, b. before 1720
"Commodore"John McKusick was quartermaster aboard the "Reprisal", a privateer which sailed from Rhode Island during the 1740s. He is listed on the ship's log as being from Portsmouth,NH and his name is spelled the same as we do now. There was a John "MacKisick" who was married in Boston, MA to Agnes Hogg in 1733 and had children baptized there before 1736. He was also married to an Elizabeth Thomas in 1749, all events being recorded by the Rev. Mr. Moorehead. It is possible that this is the same John, and that he had three families; however, there is not sufficient evidence to prove it one way or the other. It is more probable that he is the son of "Elder Kusick", who was killed by Indians in 1724 by the Oyster River in Maine as noted by Rev. Moody. John was born before 1720 at Scotland?. He married Mary Barker circa 1739 at Greenland?, NH.1

According to Samuel Lane's diary, she died at "Mr. Barker's". This was probably at her brother's (Jonathan). As she was baptized in 1720 and, as her older siblings were baptized in 1716 and 1718, it is unlikely that she was born before 1719. Mary "Kissick" joined South Church of Portsmouth on 5 Aug 1744. As John was listed as being from Portsmouth in the log of the "Reprisal" and in the Vice-Admiralty records for Nov 1745, it is apparent that the Portsmouth, NH area was their place of domicile. Records of the South Church of Portsmouth in the ministry of William Shurtleff (1732-1747) have Mary "Kissick" received into communion on 5 Aug 1744 (NH State Archives).

He served as a corporal in the Biddeford 1st Company in 1778 (Ref. Soldiers, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War - Maine: Carleton E. Fisher & Sue G. Fisher, compilers). There are several land transactions on file in York County records; first are several purchases from John and Samuel Davis in 1773 at Biddeford, ME and later several transactions between him and son, Zebediah. He is listed in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Maine censuses but not in the 1820. It is presumed that he died prior to 1820. He is listed as of Scarborough, ME in his marriage intentions.

John served at Crown Point, NY in 1762 during the French and Indian War. I believe he was also the John Kusick who was wounded at the Battle at 3 Rivers, Quebec, Cananda on 8 June 1776. He was awarded a pension at Philadelpia in 1788. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Cornish, ME and owned land on Cole's Mountain, Cornish, settling there in 1787. He sold out in 1806 although he appears on the 1810 census as residing in Cornish. Records at Biddeford show John and wife, Lydia paying £15 to secure rights to land of the estate of Francis Bettis, Lydia's father. It is not known where he and Lydia died or were buried although it was believed that they removed to the Dixmont/Troy area. John was born after 1740 at N.      She was recorded as having died at Mr. Barker's home. This was probably at her Uncle Jonathan's (her mother's brother). Family legend has it that Mehitable drowned. As her mother, Mary, died 10 days later, there is probably a connection between their deaths. Mehitable must have been a small child or infant at time of death. Mehitable was born circa 1746 at N. According to a newspaper, he was in Wellington, ME as early as 1809 and cleared a piece of land now known as the John Boston farm. He bought 100 acres from Ebenezer Bridge at Bridgeton Plantation (Troy) in 1808 and sold it to John Basford in 1810 (Kennebec Co. Deeds). He was on Dixmont voting lists from 1826-1832 and made many real estate transactions in Troy, Dixmont and Carmel.
