     Hezekiah McKusick He is remembered as a large, red-haired man with a full beard who was killed when he fell from a tree as he was cutting off a branch. In fact, he was supposed to be sitting on the branch that he was removing; whatever the facts, he was 86 yrs. when he died. He married Betsey Stackpole. Hezekiah McKusick was born on 2 September 1817.1 He died on 10 August 1903 at Cornish, ME, at age 85.1 He was buried circa 14 August 1903 at Pingree/Davis/McKusick (Berry Rd, Denmark, ME.2

He presided at the first political meeting of Minn. Territory in Aug 1848. He was a captain in the 3rd Minnesota Battery of Light Artillery during the Civil War. He was a business and civic leader in the St. Croix Valley, MN. He was one of the Republican delegates that nominated Abraham Lincoln. He was Stillwater's first mayor and served as a State Senator from 1863-1866. There is a plaque depicting his store in Stillwater that commemorates the founding of Minnesota.
